The is a household name
in the tourist world. It's no longer about how many go for the
tour. It's now about - is there anyone left who hasn't! For
a long time, the touristy ritual tradition was for anyone arriving
India to head for Rajasthan and Agra after briefly exploring
Delhi. This would be followed by the mandatory South India temples,
Varanasi or Pune were sometimes an add on!
Now that India has arrived with a bang on the global map - be it trade or business, tech or art or the stuff of culture and heritage - tourism and its twin sister, hospitality is far from lagging behind. The Golden Triangle tour package is so common place that it's taken for granted visitors will go for it. Exceptions are the surprise. Everyone knows it starts with amazing Delhi, goes fascinating Jaipur and ends at awesome Agra. The three cities are interlinked through excellent road and rail connections. The Golden Triangle tour package is so named because the three routes actually form an equilateral triangle. "Golden" because of rich cultural and historical heritage showcased.
The tour starts with magnificent Red Fort in Delhi that synthesizes Persian, European and Indian art and ornamental work. Just across the road is Jama Masjid, largest mosque in India that can hold 25,000 devotees. Next door is Chandni Chowk, oldest locality of Delhi and prominent wholesale market, established and running since 1650 and still burgeoning!
Next, visit Lakshmi Narayan Temple, a city landmark and Raj Ghat, Memorial Site of Mahatma Gandhi amidst lush lawns - a black marble platform open to the sky with an eternal flame burning perpetually at one end. Visit UNESCO world heritage sites - the 1570 A.D Humayun's Tomb and the 12th century Qutub Minar complex with the tallest individual tower in the world. The stunning iron pillar here has not rusted in 1500 years.
Drive down grand avenue Rajpath reaching Connaught Place (CP). You will cross India Gate, a 42 meter high War Memorial Arch - a national monument beautifully lit up in the evenings. And Parliament House, a marvelous circular structure, one kilometer in circumference with a broad corridor with 247 pillars . Also the President's Residence, a vast mansion of 360 rooms, the largest residence of any Chief of the State in the world. Popular CP has many fine restaurants, premier shopping, cinema halls.
Next on agenda of the Golden Triangle tour package is eye catching
Jaipur or 'Pink city', founded 1727 A.D., with beautiful gardens,
parks and monuments. Visit Amber Fort whose grandeur comprises
walls filled with mirror work, mosaics, engravings, carvings,
paintings, frescoes and murals. Its Sheesh Mahal has walls and
ceiling covered with intricate carvings embedded with mirrors.
Tour the 260 years old city, its outstanding City Palace and
the Observatory or Jantar Mantar, which is the largest stone
astronomical observatory in the World (built 1727 -1733) . Also
the 1860 A.D. Ram Niwas Gardens housing the Central Museum,
Zoo, a theatre, exhibition grounds, gymnasium, cafés. Hawa Mahal
(Palace of Winds) built 1799, has a beautiful facade of 953
windows and latticed screens and arches for unbridled air flow
currents in set patterns. Finally arrive Agra, visiting the
1569 A.D. abandoned city of Fatehpur Sikri en route whose 1648
A.D. Jama Masjid mosque contains the Tomb of revered Sufi Saint
Salim Chisti (1418- 1571). Head for the wonder of the world
since 1630 A.D. that needs no introduction - the Taj Mahal .
Also visit the 1573 A.D. Agra Fort - a walled palatial city
stretching 2.5 km with walls seventy feet high. The Golden Triangle
tour package takes you back home to your Delhi hotel.
